Even though we cannot meet in person at the moment, Dream The Change CIC is conducting some great online training and talks, so don't miss out.
We'd like to say a big thank you to Dr Zakariya Absi (Lecturer, University of Essex) who talked to our parents online about Children and the Law in the UK and another big thank you Paulina Rangel (Online Tutor and a parent of a child with SEND) who trained us on Personal Safety of Individuals with Autism.
Dr Absi said that parents and carers connected to Dream The Change, CIC are aware that although our children are the most precious gift in our lives, and we endeavour to devote a great part of our life to them, we could potentially harm them by simply being unwise in certain situations or being unaware of cultural differences. Our speaker addressed the following areas:
- Extra social challenges for minority families and resulting household tension
- Children are not passive listeners but active learners (SEN children are no exception)
- Language / culture as a major source of problems
- Stereotypes could make things worse
- The way forward: think of your children!
In her talk, Pauline discussed:
- Factors that may compromise the personal safety of individuals with autism including bullying and exploitation
- Ways to safeguard against bullying and exploitation
- Strategies that individuals can use to protect themselves from harm and abuse
- Supporting individuals to use the Internet and social media safely.
If you were unable to join us online for these talks, but have any questions, please let us know.
"This training was valuable for all the attendees," said one of the parents who attended the training. "We were given useful strategies for individual safety for people with Autism. The biggest cause of death in children with Autism is drowning." Parents were able to ask questions and were given responses.
These online events for parents were made possible, thanks to funding from The National Lottery and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
